Window Design Rules: Scale & Proportion for Your Home

Rules of Scale and Proportion: Windows and Doors

Brick British home with symmetrical window design

When you are building or renovating your home, ensuring that your property is well fenestrated is key.

This means that each piece of joinery is accurately scaled and proportioned, and seamlessly blends with both the interior and exterior of your home.

We follow many rules of proportion and take steps to ensure that each window and door we manufacture is tailored to each individual property, as well as catered to your personal needs and taste. This helps us deliver exceptional window design and door design that enhances your home renovation plans.

Introduction to Scale and Proportion

In joinery terms, scale refers to how the size of each window or door relates to the size of the overall building. Ensuring each piece is to the correct scale is vital, as poorly executed architectural harmony can cause structural issues that may be expensive to resolve.

Proportion refers to how the sizes of each door and window relate to one another. For example, an entrance door will always be wider than the sidelights – this creates a visually appealing, grand effect that allows the entrance door to be the focal point.

Good scale and window proportions make for aesthetically pleasing properties, evoking a sense of order and structure and ensuring that they feel right to the eye. This also means that you can trust your property is structurally sound, well-positioned, and functional. The scale and proportions of windows and doors must make sense to the human body so that they feel natural to use. For example, a door too short, narrow, or a window too high would feel unnatural to use and would not function as intended.

Common Rules of Proportion

We use a variety of proportion rules when creating window designs and door designs for our clients. The rule we use most in our projects is The Golden Ratio; also known as the Fibonacci Sequence. This is a mathematical proportion which creates visually appealing designs and has been used in architecture for thousands of years.

Did You Know? The Golden Ratio can be found in many well-known buildings and structures, such as the Parthenon in Greece, the Taj Mahal in India, and Notre Dame Cathedral in France! It can also be found in many natural elements, most notably spiral seashells or sunflower seeds, which is why it has such a subconscious universal appeal.

The Golden Ratio is not only used for the overall dimensions of a building, but also for the placement of windows and doors. Applying this ratio ensures the inside and outside connect seamlessly, allowing for the efficient use of space and light and making the property feel right to the eye.

We also commonly use the Rule of Thirds when planning your windows and doors. The Rule of Thirds is a guideline that splits a wall or view into a grid of three by three, creating interest and drawing the eye. This subverts the norm of objects and elements being evenly spaced by creating a well-planned, interesting layout.

To add to this, the deliberate asymmetry shown in the Rule of Thirds creates more intrigue, as there is beauty in imperfection. Placing windows and doors along the lines, or in the four ‘sweet spots’ where the lines interconnect, is key to creating visual interest on a property and forming balanced window proportions in your architectural elements.

How Scale and Proportion Changes the Feel of a Room

Architectural elements can truly make or break a space, being the difference from being cramped and overwhelming or spacious and comfortable. Elements too big for a room can make the space feel restrictive, overwhelming and closed in, whereas elements too small for a room can create a sense of unease and make you feel lost in the openness – almost as though the room is not designed for you.

Monumental and intimate scales are factors you need to consider if you’re planning a renovation or upgrading your joinery. Monumental scale refers to elements that are significantly larger than human scale. For example, large doorways, arches, or full-length (floor-to-ceiling) windows. Intimate scale refers to structures or elements that are smaller, personal, and human-sized. Examples of this include industry standard windows and doors, or lower ceilings.

Monumental scale creates a feeling of awe, inspiration and grandeur, which is why it is more commonly found in churches or public buildings. Larger spaces make you want to investigate your surroundings, sparking curiosity, as there is more space to explore. Intimate scale creates feelings of comfort, privacy, and relaxation, and it is much easier to concentrate in these spaces as there are fewer things to focus on.

Proportion

Proportion can also very easily adjust how you feel about your surroundings and the experience you have in your home. Proportions that are successfully executed will make someone feel ‘right’ in their environment and create a sense of belonging. This also helps a space feel balanced and natural.

If you’re trying to create a space that feels natural, harmonious and comfortable to be in, opting for windows and doors that follow human scale is the better choice. However, if you are trying to make a statement with your joinery, choosing larger statement pieces like floor-to-ceiling windows or large doors and archways is the way to do that, as offsetting the human scale with larger elements creates the curious feeling of awe in your guests. These choices are essential in high-end window design and door design.
