Contemporary Beach Home with Timber Windows

Grey weather boarded property, with white timber casement windows and a slate grey timber entrance door fitted to the front elevation.

A new-build, beach-side property, crafted by ArchTech architectural consultants, was completed by Hillstone, and finished with Westbury Windows and Joinery for results that skilfully delivered on the client’s vision.

‘Our client had an idea for a contemporary New England styled beach home with painted weatherboards, and it was key the timber windows and joinery fit this coastal home style and were designed to make the most of the surrounding views,’ explains Westbury Windows and Joinery’s Managing Director, Adam Pritchard. This house by the sea, now a home, has rooms that are bathed in the beautifully natural Guernsey light, and this is a testament to the skill and precision of the architects, builders and suppliers involved.

The existing property had been demolished with a new build put in its place to create a contemporary beach home that was spacious, full of light, and impressive. A mixture of timber casement windows, French doors, and single timber doors were included in designs to add interest and depth to the property.

It was also requested that four shaped feature timber windows were included for added grandeur and interest, with the main focal point being the three timber casement windows in the hexagonal style stand-out entrance.

Westbury worked closely with Hillstone on setbacks and pane layouts to add shadow and depth to the space and aided in the design of the canopy on the rear elevation, together with the fascia around the rear bay. This architecturally led approach, and innovative design made us the right choice for the client who have expressed their joy with the results — even going so far as to say they are happy to welcome visitors to showcase the products in their home.

All timber casement windows and French doors were painted in our signature Westbury White to punch clean apertures in the boarding and make it more visually interesting. Casement windows are a versatile design, that blend seamlessly into any property they’re added to. With their ability of allowing maximum ventilation and natural light, they were the ideal choice for this property, meaning the sea air and radiant sun could flow throughout the home with ease. The single doors were painted in Westbury Slate, to blend seamlessly with the weatherboarding on the exterior of the property. Additional to the main house was a newly constructed garage, which included Westbury windows, and two sets of open out garage doors, also completed in Slate.

The characteristics and fine lines of traditional wooden joinery cannot be found in uPVC alternatives, and providing that the right materials are used and correct care is taken, a timber window or timber door can last for decades looking as good as new. In our joinery, we exclusively use Accoya® timber for its exceptional environmental credentials, stability, and durability. Through a proprietary chemical process, Accoya® timber is engineered to dramatically reduce water absorption, making it far more resistant to weathering. Combined with strong, precision-crafted joints, this means our work won’t swell, warp, or twist, even in the toughest conditions.

Giving this property a distinguished entrance, to welcome them home and impress visitors, was also key for the client. A glazed-panel entrance door, finished in Slate was chosen, to blend effortlessly with the other single doors on the property. Adding the glazed element elevated the entrance by simply adding a touch of character, and allowing for light to flow through the property.

Often overlooked, locks, handles and other ironmongery fittings may seem like small details, but can truly make or break the look of your windows and doors, but should also feel secure, functional and stable. For this property, all window and door ironmongery were solid brass, finished in Polished Chrome; produced by our UK based manufacturer ‘From the Anvil’. The garage doors, however, had black ironmongery fitted to complement design.

Westbury joined this project to execute the client’s vison of the ideal beach-side property. Creating windows, doors and roof lanterns to suit your property, Westbury joinery is designed and manufactured in our workshop in Essex.
