Joinery Case Study: New England Style Beach House

As seen in Jesy Nelson’s BOYZ music video, this New England-style home has been stylishly finished with custom-built Westbury Windows and doors, including New England-style windows and New England-style doors.

Embarking on his own self-build project, this property developer from Saltbox Design and Build had his heart set on custom-designed doors and windows that would accentuate the distinctive aesthetics of his New England-style home. Inspired by the spectacular beach houses found in Osterville, Massachusetts, the client demolished the previously existing property and built this breathtaking home with timber weatherboarding. He felt his dream home deserved something special and wanted to install British-made, custom-built, high-quality timber doors and windows, well-suited to coastal applications where durability and stability are essential.

The client was particularly interested in our use of Accoya and our ability to combine classic designs with high-performance technology. Accoya is an engineered timber that is dimensionally stable and highly durable. It is water-resistant, virtually rot-proof, does not swell, shrink, twist, or warp, and has minimal joint movement, ensuring a long-lasting finish. Unlike most hardwoods, it is also environmentally friendly, manufactured from sustainable pine forests. As the client was a big fan of the material, we supplied him with additional timber at his request to construct a pergola for his garden.

For a traditional look, we supplied weighted box sash New England-style windows that perfectly complemented the property. Because of the property’s unique shingle cladding, we included external cheeks to finish the windows off with a neat look.

On the upper floor, the dormers were fitted with Casement windows, which worked better with the proportions of the house. However, to keep the overall style neat and uniform, they were designed to match the look of the other weighted sash windows.

Leading onto the back patio, we fitted three sets of folding doors painted in Westbury White. To contrast with the cool, pale colours, the vertical boarded front door is painted in a striking black shade, along with the garage doors. The sidelights reflect the same tasteful style while letting in plenty of natural sunlight into the entrance hallway.
