In stately homes, windows are more than functional; they are key architectural features that reflect style, symmetry and tradition. The right window design can enhance a home’s grandeur, whether you’re restoring a historic estate or building a new one with classic character.
The enduring appeal of traditional window styles
When choosing a window design for a stately house, it is key that you research into the history of the property in question, and the different designs available to make an educated decision on what design will suit your property.
Westbury offers several different window designs, such as Casement windows, Spring Balanced Sash windows, Box Sash windows or French windows, each coming with their own benefits. For stately homes, we often see that casement or sash windows are preferred for their historical accuracy and ability to blend with the existing architecture, but we’ve uncovered the benefits of each style choice below.

Casement windows
Casement windows are formed of hinges that are typically attached to the upright side of a frame so that it opens along its entire length. They are an ideal choice for stately homes due to their many benefits.
Casement windows offer superior ventilation with their ability to open fully, allowing for maximum airflow. They are also energy efficient; as when closed, they create a tight seal against their frame, minimizing air leakage and drafts.
Adding to this, they are low maintenance, and often operated with a simple handle mechanism, making them easy to open and close. They also have an enhanced security system, as they often feature multi-point locking mechanisms, making them more secure than other window styles, giving you extra peace of mind.

Box Sash windows
Box sash windows are comprised of a case that houses cords, pulleys and weights to counterbalance the sashes at the top and bottom of the frame, providing a smooth motion when opening. This design is perfect for listed properties as it offers a combination of aesthetic appeal and elegance, mixed with modern performance benefits.
This style is often chosen for stately homes as it keeps with the traditional architecture of the building. Plus, it offers brilliant ventilation and airflow, allowing for natural temperature regulation. However, this design can come with a higher price tag due to the complex mechanism.
Sash window designs also often follow the Golden Ratio. This keeps things balanced and proportionate, and this is often found in nature, art and design.

Spring Balanced Sash windows
Like the Box Sash window design, spring balanced sash windows follow the same glazing bar pattern; however, they do not use the traditional weight system, rather the mechanical opening is spring loaded which makes it easier to operate and simpler by design (and therefore more cost effective!) due to the fewer moving parts. This style is seen more in new builds as a modern alternative to the Box Sash.

How classic window designs complement British heritage architecture
Westbury windows all follow heritage designs, making them the perfect fit for listed properties and stately homes. Not only this, but we take pride in knowing all our windows are British made with British architecture in mind.
Classic window designs preserve the historical character of listed or period properties, maintaining the architectural integrity during restorations or renovations. Westbury follows authentic detailing by threading traditional features such as sash cords, glazing bars and timber frames into our designs; to mirror the craftmanship of original British designs.
Using timber means that Westbury windows blend seamlessly with the stone, brick and render typical of British heritage buildings.
Choosing the right materials for timeless elegance
Whatever style you choose to emulate the authentic period charm of your home’s original features, it is recommended that you opt for timber windows rather than uPVC; this is because it can look out of place on a historic home and can also become brittle or discoloured on the outside.
We use an engineered timber called Accoya®, which is dimensionally stable with a class one durability status: matching or exceeding most hardwoods. Accoya® timber is water resistant, rot-proof and does not swell, twist or warp, and with little to no movement to the joints, it is ensured that it not only looks better for longer, but also requires less maintenance.
